Getting Started

Caution: This product is for indoor use only

Place the TRIO Portable air purifier in a location that will not restrict air flow through either the air inlet or the air outlet, then plug-in the electrical cord at the nearest electrical wall outlet.

Note

The TRIO Portable will perform a self diagnostic test of indicator lights and functions when plugged in to the wall outlet. This will only happen once unless the system is unplugged from the wall and reinstalled.

  1. Press-in Power (ON/OFF) button to turn-on the air purifier. The lights on the control panel will turn on. The UVC lamp will turn on and the fan motor will turn on.
  2. Look into the air outlet at the top of the air purifier and confirm that the UVC lamp is on. You will see a faint blue glow when the lamp is on. When the UVC lamp is on, the air purifier is ready for operation.
  3. Press the “Fan Speed Button” until the green LED bar light underneath “Room size/Fan speed” reaches the corresponding size of your room. Calculations in both “square feet” and “square meters” (length x width) measurements are conveniently listed at either side of the green LED bar lights. Correctly setting this indicator will keep the air volume at an optimum level.
  4. Press the “Sleep Mode Button” at night if you desire to reduce fan noise. A green LED light will illuminate to the right side of the button. This will maintain constant airflow through the purifier and reduce fan speed to a minimum. Press the sleep mode button again to return to the normal air flow mode.

TRIO Introduction

TRIO Unboxing and Setup

TRIO Filter and Lamp Replacement

Technology

  • UVC Technology

    • UV light reduces a wide array of harmful contaminants in your home plus reduces bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungi.
  • PRO-Cell Technology

    • The PRO-Cell is Field Controls’ patent-pending technology to eliminate hazardous chemicals, gases, and odors. Our PRO-Cell filters have a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) layer that when exposed to the powerful germicidal ultraviolet (UVC) light, it creates a reaction, VOCs, gaseous contaminants, and odors come into contact with the PRO-Cell™ surface. These harmful chemicals are converted to odorless, harmless water vapor and Carbon Dioxide. The HEPA filter captures particles, the PRO-Cell eliminates chemicals, and the UVC reduces biological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungi. When used properly, the PRO-Cell technology is a powerful air purifier ideal for improving air quality.
  • H13 HEPA Filter

    • TRIO Plus is equipped with an H13 HEPA medical-grade filter which are high grade small-particle filters that are typically used in medical-grade air purifiers. Many air purifiers use classic HEPA filters which are usually H10, H11, or H12 class.
        • H10 – 85% efficiency
        • H11 – 95% efficiency
        • H12 – 99% efficiency
        • H13 HEPA filters remove at least 99.9% of airborne particles 0.1 micrometers (μm) in diameter

Troubleshooting

  • Unit will not turn on

    • Make sure the receptacle that the air purifier is plugged into has power. Check the receptacle with another appliance, such as lamp or clock radio.
    • Check the top and front grills for proper installation. They must be completely snapped into position or the air purifier will not operate. The top grill must be installed with the ultraviolet reflector facing forward.
  • UVC lamp is not turning on, but all other functions are working properly

    • Check the UVC lamp for proper position. Remove the top grill by pressing in the two locking tabs and lifting upward. The lamp should be locked into position between the 2 female receptacles. To check, rotate the lamp 1/4 turn and remove. Reverse the process making sure the top grill is completely inserted. Reapply power.
    • With lamp removed visually check the coil heaters located at both ends of the UVC lamp. If either of the heater wires are broken or appear to be not connected, replace the lamp.
  • UVC lamp is flickering but will not start

    • Replace the starter located in the ultraviolet chamber. First, remove the ultraviolet bulb as described above, then remove the starter by turning counter clockwise 1/4 turn. Install the new starter by reversing the above process.
  • Chemical sensor indicator is continually in yellow or red zone

    • Remove the source of air pollution. Keep in mind that household cleaners, paint and paint solvents, high concentrations of cigarette smoke, fingernail polish remover, and hair spray are a few chemicals that will keep the sensor indicator in the upper limits.
  • After replacing the filters and UVC lamp, the service now red indicator lights remain on

    • Reset the microprocessor by inserting a small pin or the straighten end of a paper clip into the two small holes marked “Reset” directly beneath the lamp and filter indicating lights.
  • The airflow exiting the air purifier has decreased significantly, and the filter green “OK” light is on

    • The filter media has become clogged prematurely due to an environment that contains a very high level of particle pollution. Replace the filters, and reset the filter timer to zero. The microprocessor that controls the replacement lights operates on a 24-month timer for the filter circuit, and should be reset every time an expendable component is replaced.
  • The red UV replacement light is on, but the UVC lamp appears to be operating correctly

    • The UVC lamp is rated for continual use of one year. After that time, the bulb will continue to operate, but the germ and bacteria reducing ultraviolet radiation has diminished to a point where it is no longer effective. Replace the component, and reset the microprocessor timer.

FAQs

Why do I get a funny odor from my TRIO Portable unit?

First, check to make sure that all packaging has been removed from the TRIO. This includes the protective padding behind the UVC lamps. Second, some new filters can produce a different odor initially; however, this will go away within a couple of days.

How often should the filters be replaced?

The pre-filter is reusable and can be washed and vacuumed to remove large particulates that build up. The H13 HEPA and activated carbon filters should be replaced after about 2,000 hours of operation or a minimum of every 6 months depending on the environment. If the area the unit is running in sees high amounts of air contaminants, the filters may require changing more frequently.

How often should the UVC lamp be replaced?

We recommend the lamp be replaced every 12 months for optimal performance.

How do I size a TRIO Portable for a room's size?

Sizing for a room depends on how many air changes per hour you need. The TRIO Portable has a high airflow and in one hour can exchange the volume of air in 1,155 sq. ft. room, and exchange 5 times the volume of the air in a 577 sq. ft. room.

1 Air change per hour 2243 ft² 2008 m²) (47 ft x 47 ft)

3 Air changes per hour 748 ft² (69 m²) (27 ft x 27 ft)

5 Air changes per hour 449 ft² (42 m²) (21 ft x 21 ft)

What are the key purification technologies included in TRIO Portable?

The TRIO Portable features 5 stages of purification:

  1. Pre-filter – captures large particles, hair, and dust balls.
  2. H13 HEPA Filter – captures >99.97% of 0.3-micron particulates down to 0.1-microns.
  3. Carbon Filter – captures odors and gases.
  4. PRO-Cell Technology – reduces harmful chemical and gases.
  5. UVC – two powerful UVC lamps for germicidal protection.

What do the authorities recommend to reduce transmission?

CDC, EPA, and ASHRAE recommend

  1. Control the Source – Work on reducing the source of the air contaminants.
  2. Increase Ventilation – Bring in as much outdoor air as possible and ensure HVAC settings are maximizing ventilation.
  3. Use Air Cleaners – Add proven effective air cleaning devices, HEPA and UVC, to filter and purify the air.
