ASHRAE writes standards and guidelines to guide the HVAC industry, contractors and builders in the delivery of goods and services to the public. ASHRAE standards and guidelines include uniform methods of testing for rating purposes, describe recommended practices in designing and installing equipment and provide other information to guide the industry. Standard 62.2 defines the roles of and minimum requirements for mechanical and natural ventilation systems and the building envelope intended to provide acceptable indoor air quality in low-rise residential buildings. The 2016 edition of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.2 makes two major changes to scope by including unvented space heaters as a potential contaminant source and by expanding “covered dwellings” to include all multifamily dwelling units.
